The Role of ICT in libraries
The emergence of ICT is the new paradigm to extend the level of library operation and services. The ICT made it possible for libraries to tackle the present environment and demands is a faster and approachable manner. The quality of library services will not match the digital society if the libraries does not incorporate the ICT application for the betterment of the services.
A service/ information is useful only if it provided to the right user at right time, in right format and accessible from anywhere. And ICT plays a big role in completion of this vision.
- There are several tools which a library uses. Like Communication technology, Remote control technology and Social media etc.
- ICT is providing security to the library materials with the help of RFID technology, closed-circuit television (CCTV) and others,
- QR codes to store data about libraries library staff etc.
- Digital library era need technology prominent libraries and the entire reading material depends on computer and networks.
- Resource sharing (libraries consortia) is also an increasing in scope and to cope up with the various limitations of having less financial sources. The role of technology is very much significant for cooperative acquisition, cooperative processing, exchange of information material, joint publication, networking etc.
- Use of library management software like Koha, Soul 2.0, NewGen Lib, etc. The ICT is used for the various housekeeping operations ex., acquisition, circulation, serial management, stock verification etc.
