Automated identification of library document participating in a particular technological operation involves reading data from tag memory located in RFID reader working area. 

What is RFID?

It is basically radiofrequency identification i.e. the technology used in it is radio waves to identify the individual documents/ items automatically.

The components of RFID system:

  1. RFID tags/transponder
  2. Readers or sensors to query the tags
  3. Antenna 
  4.  Server o which the software that interfaces with integrated library software is loaded
  5. RFID label printer
  6. Hand held reader
  7. Self check unit 
  8. External book return
  9. Staff and conversion station

1. Shelf management: The RFID makes the task of identification of items on the shelves easy task. it is very useful when the library staff have to check an individual book or books asked by the user. Search for the book which are mis-hevled and also the checking of whole library stock (stock verification) for lost books and book that are misplaced.

2. Book Drop: With the help of this services the returning of the books become so convenient. the books can be returned without any que and it is also flexible for staff and users making the whole process of check-out so easy. This book drop can be placed in the library building or outside it. 

3. Patron self-checkout: Users can self check out the documents and other media of a library at the self-check out station. A computer with touch screen and RFID reader and a special software for managing the data of the documents. 

4. RFID tags: The tag hold the data of the documents and the ownership, storage location, history and the status of the book (loan status). 

5. Counter station: Staff assisted counter for the loan, return and other services. the charging and discharging involves dis-alarming and alarming of the tag.

1. This improves the workflow of the libraries by reducing the non-value added processes. 
2. The services provided to the users are improved. 
3. The productivity of the staff can be increased because reduces the workload of the staff. 
4.  The searching of a book which is wrongly placed by the users in the library became easy.
5. Traceability of the book can be increased. 
6. Self check out and self check-in. 
7. More then one book can be charged and discharged at one time. 
8. Better accuracy in the management of book collection in the library.
